The Global Biotechnology Transfer Foundation (www.gbtfoundation.org) is an international, not-for-profit organisation. Our mission is to promote awareness of the potential for biotechnology to support sustainable, long-term, socio-economic development. Our global vision is to establish the synergy between agriculture, the first great biotechnology to be developed, and the potential to enable the evolution of bio-based economies within developing and emerging countries. Our goal is to assist in the transition from fossil fuel-based economic development to sustainable bio-based economies, which will offer opportunities for long-term economic growth through enhanced use of renewable, sustainable resources. The Foundation is developing state-of-the-art education and demonstration facilities at a designated site in the UK which will form the international hub of our activities. The Foundation’s mission is supported by the United Nations Foundation (UNF) in the quest for the adoption of appropriate biotechnology for socio-economic development. Through intimate association with the UNF and international donors, our vision will be implemented via satellite centres developed in association with host nations, to foster a truly global presence. GBTF has three platforms to achieve its mission: • Education: develop and build an awareness of the potential for biotechnology to foster economic development across the entire value chain, from agricultural production and manufacturing, to material recycling and waste management. To achieve this, the Foundation provides education through the provision of UK-based formal courses, training workshops and demonstrations, in association with an international network of leading research institutes. Courses are accredited, customisable and tailored to cover the four principle areas of biotechnology, namely agricultural (green), marine (blue), pharmaceutical (red), industrial (white). • Implementation: design and implementation of projects supporting sustainable socio-economic development and driving the evolution of a bio-based economy. In addition, GBTF offers a complete and comprehensive range of consultancy services to support the successful implementation of biotechnology and its related fields. • Demonstration: Provision of a wide range of services to allow the evaluation, selection, development and demonstration of biotechnological solutions within the agricultural, bio-processing, industrial, manufacturing and biofuels sectors. It’s a unique opportunity to see ‘biotechnology in action’, as GBTF provides direct links to companies and institutes which have already developed the technology. In addition, a demonstration/brokerage service allows clients to fully acquire the necessary technology.
