GALATISTA BIOGAS COMMUNITY

Description: The rural area of Galatista is situated in the Northwest part of Chalkidiki county and has a population of about 2.500 inhabitants. The area has a strong livestock capacity with large numbers of cattle, sheep and goats. Moreover, there are big processing facilities producing milk, dairy products and meat.

Main actions so far:

• ISABEL partners participated at the 7th Livestock – Farming Day organized in September 2017 in Galatista aiming at:
  • presenting the concept of biogas community, motivating the local stakeholders and establishing a collaboration framework;
  • creating awareness regarding the new/ upcoming Greek law about Energy Communities and the requirements to be fulfilled by the local community to become recognized as an “Energy Community” under this law;
• Gathering data to make a rough estimation of biogas potential in the area including:
  • the capacity of energy community’s livestock holdings;
  • waste from cheese dairies and olive oil mills in the energy community.

Next steps:

• Thorough assessment of biomass potential for biogas production;
• Estimation of the energy production of the potential biogas plant;
• Identification of feasible alternative locations for a biogas plant according to current National and European legislation;
• Elaboration of a complete feasibility study for the biogas plant operation;
• Exploring of potential funding sources.
