Description: Suma foods is a large cooperatively run food wholesaler distributing throughout the UK. The co-op is looking to address Food waste management from canteen and out of date food; support better environmental practices of its food suppliers; connection with local food hubs. Anaerobic digestion as tool in sustainable waste management is being actively considered

Internal audit is in progress to estimate amount of wastes from the organisation. Co-operative and horizontal management imply a longer decision-making process.

ISABEL is supporting the process with initial techno-economic data.

Main actions so far:

• The UK ISABEL team has held a number of virtual meetings designed to discuss and establish Suma’s vision
• During the discussions the option for establishing a small-scale AD plant was discussed particularly as the UK team had been made aware of the availability of small units which needed to moved.

Next steps:

Both parties will continue to work together to establish the scope and overall feasibility of implementing AD as part to the companies waste management.
