The first consulation workshop in Baden-Württemberg region was conducted by the ISABEL partner Lake Constance Foundation on Thursday 14 April. The first regional consultation workshop mainly aimed to introduce participants into the concept of the ISABEL project and initiate a discussion around its vision and core notions. The presentation of the ISABEL project was embedded in a region wide workshop regarding the future options of bioenergy and the use of biogas which was organised by Lake Constance Foundation and a regional utility company. In total, the ISABEL related sessions, hosted 40 participants representing a wide range of biogas stakeholder groups (e.g. farmers, energy providers, environmental NGOs, etc.).
Different scenarios for a long lasting use of biogas and bioenergy were presented. Firstly, Mr. Volker Kromrey, project manager of the Lake Constance Foundation, presented the ISABEL project. It has to be noted that he audience payed highly attention to the information Mr. Kromrey gave, since participants found that the approach to the subject was new and surprising for the audience. Consequently, Mr. Volker Kromrey moderated an open discussion regarding the ISABEL vision, the communal approach of the biogas production and the requirements for its realisation that aimed to elicit the regional biogas stakeholders’ perceptions on biogas and community bioenergy.
A very fruitfull discussion was held and several interesting topics emerged. In particular, the main findings of this first workshop suggest that:
- Local stakeholders believe that there are multiple benefits from the community’s participation in a biogas project.
- There is a high significance of stakeholders’ involvement in biogas projects.
- A number of factors affect the successful realization of communal bioenergy with the most important being (i) economic factors; (ii) relevant infrastructure, and (iii) existence of appropriate motivation and initiatives.
